Machining a Backplate for a 6-Jaw Chuck for my 1942 South Bend Lathe – Part 3

The shop has acquired a Buck Chuck, 6 inch, 6-jaw chuck that has a back plate for the 1960 South Bend Lathe. I would like to use this on the 1942 South Bend, but that will require a different back plate as the spindle nose threads are different. These aren’t available commercially, so I have no alternative than to make one.

Machining a lowboy trailer pin with Vanover Machine and getting interrupted by Josh Topper!

I took a road trip this past week and stopped by to see Kyle at @VanoverMachineAndRepair. Kyle was gracious enough to let me hang out in his shop for a bit over a couple of days and I also got to meet some other local machinists and machine rebuilders. Had a little fun and recorded him trying to get a rush job out the door – in between all the phone calls! 😂

What’s the next best thing to visiting Keith Rucker’s shop in Georgia or Clarke

What’s the next best thing to visiting Keith Rucker’s shop in Georgia or Clarke Easterling’s foundry in Mississippi? Getting Keith and Clark to visit MY shop in Ohio!

What an honor it was to have @vintagemachinery and @clarkeeasterling67 stop by. They were passing through the Cleveland area and I was able to arrange a tour for them of the @midwestrailwaypreservation down at the old B&O roundhouse. While they were here, they accepted my invitation to see my small shop and how Keith has been an inspiration to me on my journey to being a machinist. I cannot thank them enough!

Using the Arccaptain MIG 145P to learn how to weld

Arccaptain asked me if I would check out this MIG 145P flux core MIG welder for them. I used it to teach one of my best friends what I could about welding with it. I am not a welding instructor, just another idiot on YouTube. Chris got to take this welder, a TIG torch and a welding helmet home, courtesy of Arccaptain.

If you’re interested in this welder, you can get more details here along with a 5% discount:

New Machine Day! K. O. Lee Tool & Cutter Grinder

I have had my eye out for a tool and cutter grinder for some time now. But since I like to keep costs to a minimum, the ones I have seen on Fakebook and places are just more than I want to spend. Plus, I need one that will fit in a small space. I kick myself to this day for passing on a nice Brown and Sharp that was at a local auction. When I saw this one come up, I managed to be the winning bidder. It’s going to sit for a while until I can get to it, but it’s here when I am ready to get it prepped for me to learn how to use it.

Machining a Backplate for a 6-Jaw Chuck for my 1942 South Bend Lathe – Part 1

The shop has acquired a Buck Chuck, 6 inch, 6-jaw chuck that has a back plate for the 1960 South Bend Lathe. I would like to use this on the 1942 South Bend, but that will require a different back plate as the spindle nose threads are different. These aren’t available commercially, so I have no alternative than to make one.

During the process of machining the back plate, I would need something to measure the progress of the internal threads, so I thread gauge is necessary and I will also need to make one of those!
