Making an axle for a 50 ton railroad jack

I’ve recently joined as a member/volunteer for the Midwest Railway Preservation Society. One of the pieces of equipment we have at the roundhouse is a set of 50 ton railroad jacks. One of the maneuvering wheels needed a new axle. I volunteered to make one as a replacement.

Mounting a 3 Jaw Check on my Rotary Table – Part 2/4

Part 2 of this series of making an adapter plate to mount a 6″ chuck to my 8″ rotary table for use on the Bridgeport vertical milling machine. I make a locating pin to help line up the plate, plus do the finish machining on it.

Mounting a 3 Jaw Check on my Rotary Table – Part 1/4

I’ve got this 8″ rotary table that I would like to make a little more useful. One way is to attach a lathe chuck to it. I have an old 6″ 3 jaw chuck that should do the trick. I just need to make an adapter plate as an adapter plate to mount it all together.

Installing the Feed Distribution Unit in the K&T 2HL

Finally time to install the feed distribution unit back into the knee of the Kearney & Trecker 2HL horizontal milling machine and testing the rapid traverse and power feed operations for the knee and saddle.

Setting the Saddle on the Knee of the K&T Mill

With the saddle all clean and with new felts, it’s time to do a little assembly. I get some pieces back on the knee, check the oil pump and then install the saddle onto the knee.

New Oil Wicks for the K&T Saddle

With the oil passages of saddle on the K&T 2HL all clear, I need to fish all the oil felts between the different outlets and the oil reservoir. Had some issues with the fragility of the felt cords. I managed to get them all completed, but it was quite an ordeal.
